Aligning guarantee expiry with contract milestones
How bid and performance guarantee dates drift away from tender calendars — and how to catch the drift before issuance.
Guarantee applications often inherit dates from the last tender the team won. Those dates rarely survive contact with the new contract’s taking-over certificate or defect liability period.
Start from the clause, not the template
Pull the claim window and return conditions from the signed contract or tender extract. Only then open the bank’s standard guarantee form. Templates that auto-fill “one year from issuance” need deliberate override.
Watch the quiet gap after taking-over
Performance guarantees sometimes expire on the expected taking-over date while the contract still allows claims during a defect liability period. Banks will issue what you request; beneficiaries may refuse it later. Flag the mismatch in writing to your project lead before the application leaves finance.
Bid bonds and extension language
If a tender evaluation is chronically late, note whether the bond requires automatic extension or written re-issuance. Our guarantee wording check records that distinction so procurement is not surprised in week six of evaluation.
Bangkok practice tip
Several Thai banks ask for a Thai-language annex summarising amount and expiry even when the guarantee body is English. Prepare both before the issuance appointment to avoid a second visit.
